Davidson College is an independent liberal arts school with an enrollment of about 1,700 students. The town is known for its progressive land use policies and embrace of "new urbanist" design principles, on display in walkable developments like Vermillion and Birkdale Village. Founded: 1873 Charlotte Charlotte, North Carolina's largest city and the seat of Mecklenburg County, is located in the southern part of the state near the South Carolina border. From 1800 to 1848, Charlotte was the center of U.S. gold production. A branch of the U.S. mint operated there from 1837 to 1913.
